DIABETIC EYE EXAMS

Diabetes can cause changes in the back of your eye and these change are often not noticed until there is significant vision loss. The most serious problem associated with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy. This occurs when the tiny blood vessels in the retina become weakened or swollen, which causes blood leakage and an unhealthy growth of new blood vessels. Over time, these complications can become sight-threatening. This is a sign of damage throughout your body due to diabetes, and it is often first detected in your eyes.

Patients with diabetes should have a dilated eye exam every year to detect any changes as early as possible, so that Dr. Lee can work with your family doctor to manage the condition. Eye exams for people living with diabetes are covered by OHIP every 12 months.
